There's something mysterious and evil happening at an Italian abbey, including murder, that have some believing that the apocalypse is near. Two Franciscan Monks, one an intellectual (Connery) and the other his trainee (Slater), arrive and offer to try to help solve the mystery.

Any film starring Sean Connery is worth a look and for the first 110 minutes or so this is a very captivating movie. They manage to dig through the clues to solve, what Connery is positive is, a natural crime not the apocalypse. The mystery is going great, wonderful characters show up on the scene including an inquisitor from the Catholic church, Connery's background is explained and just when it's getting ready to pop.....

.....the finale arrives. The reason for the crimes is just silly, though the way they laid out the clues during the movie was good, and the "ending" was just too over-the-top.

  • Audio Commentary By Director Jean-Jacques Annaud
  • Making-Of Documentary (In German With English Subtitles)
  • "Photo Video Journey" With Jean-Jacques Annaud

This is a great film all the way up to the finale. This movie is based on a book, maybe the finale was much more captivating to the reader than to this audience member. Don't let this keep you from watching it, just don't get your hopes up too high.
