Plot

It's Christmas time in England and Henry II is gathering his wife (who is currently in prison) and his three sons together to talk about who will reside on the throne after his death. The King and Queen disagree which son it should be and the fun starts from there. Also invited to the gathering is the King of France and the king's current mistress; both of which have a role to play in all the plots and subplots.

Pros

It's all in the details and I cannot think of another film I've seen that can touch the dialogue in this one. The two main stars of this film, Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn are absolutely spectacular. The banter and political maneuvering is masterful and, if you're paying attention, they're down right funny people. They deliver their lines so effortlessly it's easy to believe that they were married. The rest of the cast including a young Anthony Hopkins and even younger Timothy Dalton, capably do their best to keep up with the two incredible stars they're working with.

Cons

Absolutely nothing unless you can't handle movies that mostly rely on dialogue; no major action scenes in this one.

Extras

  • Audio Commentary by Director Anthony Harvey
  • Original Theatrical Trailer

Recommendation

Simply put this is one of my all-time favorite movies starring two of my favorite actors. The dialogue and it's delivery is one of, if not the best, in movie history. I've seen this movie probably a dozen times and it never gets boring.
