Plot

Follow along with three members of an army bomb squad as they do their job in Iraq. See how they interact with not only the locals but with other members of the armed forces and what drives them to do the job they do; some just do it because it's their job and they are counting the days down until they go home and others, well, I won't spoil it for you.

Pros

First and foremost are the main characters in this film and the outstanding job the actors did portraying them; you care about these people even though you may not understand what motivates them to do what they do. This is filmed in a way that makes you feel you are right there with them without all the shaky camera work. And I also must applaud the creators of this film for not watering it down to get a better rating; this is rated "R" and rightfully so.

Cons

I really only have one complaint with this and that's the minimal inclusion of extras. This movie has won and been nominated for a wealth of awards and I can't help but think there will be a special edition coming to a store near you in the not-so-far-away future; maybe packaged in something looking like an explosive device.

Extras

  • Audio Commentary with Director Kathryn Bigelow and Writer Mark Boal
  • "The Hurt Locker": Behind the Scenes
  • Image Gallery

Recommendation

I have to applaud the director for keeping politics out of this film; they kept it about the soldiers and rightfully so. If you're interested in a gritty look on how life is on the ground in Iraq, then you'll want to pick up this film. If watching people get shot, blown up or cut open, then you'll want to leave this dvd on the shelf. After watching this film I am glad I spent my time in the Air Force; Army life is not for me. And do not worry about the almost two hour runtime, it will pass before you know it.
