Plot

Follow the story of the formation of the first African American Regiment to see battle in the American Civil War. The movie starts from the simple idea of forming the regiment all the way to the regiment's most famous battle.

Pros

This has all the attributes of a great film. The story is both fascinating and, in this case, factual. This film will keep your attention all the way until the end. The actors include Morgan Freeman (one of my all-time favorites), Denzel Washington (in one of his first prominent roles and one for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role), Mathew Broderick (in a non-comedic role that I was suprised just how well he performed) and one of films more popular character actors, Cary Ewles.

Cons

If youíre wanting to give your kids a history lesson, realize that this movie earns itís R rating for profanity, the usage of the "N" word and for graphic violence; it is a war movie after all. I would have also liked this film to have been extended another 30-45 minutes to take some time to show the background of both the soldiers that volunteered and the officers that led them.

Extras

  • Audio Commentary with Director Edward Zwick
  • "The Voices of Glory" Featurette
  • "The True Story of Glory Continues" Documentary
  • Making-Of Featurette
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Virtual Civil War Battlefield Interactive Map
  • BD Live
  • Theatrical Trailers

Recommendation

All Civil War buffs already own this film on DVD, so, is it worthy of an upgrade to Blu-Ray? If it's one of your favorite films that you revisit regularly, yes. If it sits on your shelf for a year or two before you watch it again, probably not. If you do not already own it then this is definitely the format you will want to purchase. It is an educational and enlightening two hours of entertainment that will stay with you well after the credits stop scrolling.
